What we do

Tree Surveys & Health Assessments

From a single tree to an entire estate...

Over 25 years experience in visual tree assessments and condition surveys. We use only LANTRA certified Professional Tree Inspectors.

Helping you to meet your duty of care and legal requirements as a tree owner

Planning & Development Support

Getting your project from the initial site walkover to the sales launch.

BS5837 compliant consultancy focused on achieving client's goals and timescales.

Providing a complete planning package; from initial site purchase & constraints advice, through scheme design and planning application, to condition clearing and site supervision. Time-sensitive consultancy focused on a realistic, tested approach to obtaining planning consents. From small projects for domestic clients to multi-unit sites for corporate clients.

Veteran Trees & Woodland Management

From general advice on individual issues to focused holistic management plans and strategic long-term visions.

The sustainable management of ancient trees and woodlands are fundamental to my core values. Trees grow and adapt on a much slower timescale than us, and as a result, any work to heritage assets and valued tree stock are founded on planning for the future.

TPO's and more...

What you can or cannot do with protected trees.

Most domestic trees are not protected by law, so work can be carried out without application or consent. However, there can be constraints to work imposed if your tree has some form of protection. Ranging from the most common - a tree preservation order, to felling licences from the Forestry Commission that cover larger tree removal operations, Help is on hand to advise and apply!

Tree Surgery ?

I don't provide tree surgery services, but...

Working in this business for many years, I have built relationships with those who do, and am happy to recommend these companies.

Profile

Hello, I'm Mark Welby, the Director and principal consultant at Mark Welby Consulting Arborists. I've been working with trees for over 25 years and am a Registered Consultant and Fellow of the Arboricultural Association. You can learn more about Registered Consultants on their website (here).

I've achieved various practical and pruning qualifications, including the Royal Forestry Society's Professional Diploma in Arboriculture and a LANTRA Professional Tree Inspector certification. Additionally, I'm an assessor on the Registered Consultant scheme for the Arboricultural Association and a Professional Member of the Consulting Arborist Society.

In order to stay current with the constantly changing field of arboriculture, I make it a point to attend frequent seminars and events, and I ensure that I meet all necessary CPD requirements.

I began my training in 1995 at Merrist Wood College in Guildford. There, I learned the fundamentals of rope and harness climbing, tree biology, soil science, and plant health care. Following my time at Merrist Wood, I worked at Hillier's tree propagation unit in Liss. Later, I worked for a company focused on using tree-spades to move trees, as well as performing tree surgery and extensive tree planting throughout southern England.

In 2003, I transitioned to become a tree inspector for LB Hounslow, surveying countless street trees from Bedfont and Feltham to Chiswick. During this time, I continued my studies and eventually became a tree officer at Hounslow. Eventually, I left the authority for a private consultancy practice that encompassed trees, landscape, ecology, and archaeology. After helping to grow that business for twelve years, my wife Samantha and I now operate our small practice from our home in Petersfield.
